This Patient Experience Week, we share the inspiring journey of John Rafferty, who is currently receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer at Epworth Eastern as part of a clinical trial under the care of Dr Prasad Cooray.

Since October 2023, John has been navigating his treatment with the dedicated support of his Clinical Research Coordinator, Sue Thang  and Pancreatic Nurse Specialist, Rachel Voshege  through the Jreissati Pancreatic Centre.

John is extremely appreciative of his compassionate team. With input from his son, Jason, they have customised his treatment plan to align with his needs, making it more manageable. Every fortnight, Rachel visits John during his infusion sessions, checking in on his progress and bringing along his favourite biscuits and cheese. “It’s the little things that make a big difference,” he says, emphasising how these thoughtful gestures help him feel more at ease during treatment.

In addition to the personal support, Sue plays a vital role in reminding John about his appointments and medications, ensuring he stays on track throughout his treatment journey. He acknowledges the tremendous support he receives at Epworth Eastern, stating, “I feel lucky to have such a supportive team around me.”

John’s experience highlights the profound impact of personalised care and the importance of listening to patients to understand what truly matters to them.

As we honour Patient Experience Week, we recognise John’s story and the significance of compassionate care in every step of the treatment process. Together, we can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of our patients.
