On Cancer Nurses Day, we celebrate the expertise, compassion and impact of our pancreatic nurse specialists at the Jreissati Pancreatic Centre.

Meet Anastasia Veno, our Pancreatic Nurse Coordinator, who has advanced practice experience in medical oncology, haematology and chemotherapy administration.

Anastasia leads a team committed to delivering exceptional, patient-centred care across the Richmond, Freemasons, Eastern and Geelong Epworth hospitals. Working alongside a broad multidisciplinary team, Anastasia and her team strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for every patient.

“Our pancreatic nurse specialists all bring different and valuable experiences to the role,” says Anastasia. “Whether it’s oncology experience, experience working in the ICU, or surgical knowledge. They are so supportive of their patients, and we all work well together as a team.”

Patients are what drive Anastasia in her work. “I like talking to people, understanding their stories, trying to help make a difference.”

Pancreatic cancer can be a scary diagnosis for patients and families.

For many patients, pancreatic nurse specialists become a trusted source of support and guidance.

“There's a lot of medical terminology,” says Anastasia.

“People read about survival rates, and they can get overwhelmed by that. It can stop them from focusing on the disease and their treatment.

“Our role is to help translate things, to coordinate their care, and to be the friendly, familiar face throughout their journey.”

Anastasia knows firsthand how devastating a diagnosis can be for patients and their families.

“Pancreatic cancer is personal to me because I had two family members who had pancreatic cancer before I became a pancreatic nurse.

“I understand what it’s like to be on the other side, especially because my family members didn’t get a good outcome, so I also know how it feels.”

Our nurses help patients navigate the healthcare system, understand treatment options, manage symptoms and side effects, and access the services and resources they need throughout their care.
